Our watersolutions for the

Horticultural industry

Water quality and availability are key factors in the growth, health and yield of your crops. With the right water source and treatment, you can ensure a reliable water supply and optimal growing conditions in your greenhouse. Remon provides complete solutions for the supply, treatment and discharge of water in greenhouse horticulture.

Why is water treatment important in

greenhouse horticulture?

Greenhouse horticulture places high demands on water quality. Elevated or fluctuating levels of substances such as sodium, iron or organic contaminants can directly affect crop growth and health. Factors such as electrical conductivity (EC) and water availability also play an important role in maintaining a stable cultivation process.

A reliable water source is also essential for ensuring continuity, particularly during periods of drought. By treating water effectively and securing its availability, you can prevent problems and maintain control over your crops and yields.

“Water quality largely determines the growth, health and yield of your crops.”

From well to

Reverse osmosis

Stable cultivation requires a sufficient supply of water with consistent quality. For decades, Remon has been the specialist in water wells, irrigation wells, iron removal, ultrafiltration and membrane filtration. In practice, a sufficient supply of fresh water suitable for irrigation is not always readily available. Irrigation water must also meet strict quality requirements. A private water well is therefore indispensable for greenhouse horticulture businesses. Remon supplies irrigation wells with capacities of up to 120 m³/h, ensuring that you always have sufficient irrigation water available.

Remon also supplies source water treatment systems for use in your greenhouse. We provide reverse osmosis systems with capacities of up to 30 m³/h, equipped with self-cleaning stripping towers, as well as iron removal systems with capacities exceeding 100 m³/h. Depending on the water quality and application, additional technologies such as ultrafiltration can be used. For example, ultrafiltration can treat recirculated water and drainage water by removing fine particles, bacteria and organic contaminants.

Remon provides a complete water solution for greenhouse horticulture.

Cost effective solution for your

Purification requirement

Since 2018, greenhouse horticulture businesses have been required to treat their wastewater. This means that discharge water must be treated using a system approved by the BZG.

Remon’s Oxidator has been an approved water treatment system since 2017 and achieves an average treatment efficiency of 99.7%. It enables you to comply with applicable regulations and prevent emissions of crop protection products.

The Oxidator is also one of the most cost-effective solutions for treating discharge water in the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions about water treatment in greenhouse horticulture

Why is water quality important in greenhouse horticulture?

Water quality directly affects crop growth, health and yield. Variations in factors such as sodium levels, electrical conductivity (EC) or contamination can disrupt the cultivation process and adversely affect plant development.

How do sodium levels and electrical conductivity (EC) affect my crops?

Excessive sodium levels or an unsuitable EC value can cause growth problems and reduce nutrient uptake. It is therefore important to treat the water and tailor its quality to the requirements of your crops.

When is reverse osmosis necessary in greenhouse horticulture?

Reverse osmosis is used when the water quality does not meet irrigation water requirements, for example due to excessive salt levels or contamination. This process thoroughly purifies the water, making it suitable for use in the greenhouse.

What does the treatment requirement for discharge water involve?

Since 2018, greenhouse horticulture businesses have been required to remove crop protection products from discharge water. This treatment must be carried out using a system approved by the BZG to prevent emissions into the environment.

Is a private water well more cost-effective for my business?

In many cases, water from a private well is more cost-effective than mains water, particularly when consumption is high. Combined with the right water treatment, it gives you greater control over water quality, availability and costs.

Which water treatment solution is suitable for my crops?

The right water treatment depends on your water source, crops and growing conditions. A combination of technologies, such as iron removal, filtration and reverse osmosis, is often used to tailor the water quality to your specific situation.

Why is the treatment of recirculated water and drainage water important?

When reusing water flows such as drainage water, it is important to remove contaminants and pathogens. Without treatment, these can accumulate and affect water quality and crop health. Technologies such as ultrafiltration make the water suitable for reuse while maintaining consistent quality.

How can you ensure a reliable water supply in greenhouse horticulture?

A reliable water supply requires a suitable water source combined with the right water treatment. By treating, storing and maintaining an adequate supply of water, you can prevent shortages and keep your cultivation process stable, even during dry periods.

"We have our own water factory"
"For years, we have had a groundwater well that we use to pump up pouring water for our strawberries. Situated on the Peelrand fault, we are dealing with unstable water quality here. Since we want to irrigate our strawberries with clean water, we opt for a reverse osmosis plant and a self-cleaning stripping tower from Remon. In this way, we have our own water plant with pure water. We then add the necessary nutrients for the plants as we wish. The advantage is that we can recycle the water much better. In addition, during the sprinkling of the roof of the greenhouses in the summer season, no residual layer remains on the glass anymore. That saves a lot of cleaning work!"
