SOS Dolphin purifies surface water using TITAN® UF ultrafiltration from Remon
The SOS Dolphin Foundation provides specialized assistance to cetaceans, including porpoises, dolphins, and whales that are stranded or in distress. From its center in North Holland, the foundation offers rescue, rehabilitation, and release back into the wild. In addition, SOS Dolphin combines this with education, research, and nature conservation. The foundation also provides international support in Northwest Europe, making it a leading center of expertise. SOS Dolphin is located on the Hoenderdaell Estate.
Due to the rapidly increasing number of visitors and the establishment of the SOS Dolphin Foundation, water consumption at the Hoenderdaell Estate has risen sharply in recent years. This increase was so significant that the capacity of the mains water supply became insufficient. Therefore, an alternative solution was sought. The answer was found when the estate discovered on Remon’s website that surface water purification was also among the company’s capabilities.
The saline surface water is now purified by an advanced water treatment installation from Remon. The water is pumped from the canal via a patented floating intake point, the HYDRA®. This first directs the water through a disc filter for pre-filtration, after which it is purified and desalinated through ultrafiltration and membrane filtration to produce high-quality water suitable for the basins of the SOS Dolphin Foundation. Because the Hoenderdaell Estate aims to use the purified water in the future as drinking water for the park’s animals, it is also passed through a REM4000 multi-filter. This ensures a neutral pH and the desired hardness, making the water taste and smell pleasant—something the animals appreciate when drinking.

For extra assurance, Remon has installed UV disinfection, which combats contaminants and makes the water completely safe. The purified water is stored in a 10-cubic-meter reservoir, after which an industrial booster set and three-way valve pump it under sufficient pressure to the desired locations. The system is controlled by Remon’s NT-controller®, which can be operated both locally and remotely.
